Mission Strategy

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

With market issues and health care reform changing the health care industry, our organization must ensure it sets clear direction and executes successful strategies. That’s why throughout 2012, Adventist Health focused on a new strategic plan to become a more integrated and higher performing health care delivery system.

Our disciplined approach has been carefully designed to leverage the success of the past while building new capabilities—enabling Adventist Health to be even more successful in the future. Our senior management team also committed to a strategic statement—concise but measurable—with themes that are featured in this report. We have already begun working towards strategy activation, setting metrics to measure our successes and effectively steering these strategies into each business unit at Adventist Health.

In addition to work on our comprehensive strategy, we have achieved other milestones. We’ve seen an increase in market share across the system, and our hospital-physician alignment efforts have led to expansion in our physician organization, Adventist Health Physician Services. Additionally, we’ve seen growth in our outpatient services, a core strategy for Adventist Health moving forward.

Across our enterprise, we’ve continued to enhance technology to help us streamline workflow, increase efficiency and, most importantly, improve patient safety.

Our hospitals are already among the top 12 percent in the nation* making progress toward a fully electronic patient health record (EHR). This includes preparing for the electronic submission of clinical quality measures. In 2013 we will deploy an online patient portal, allowing our patients to request appointments, view their health records and more.

Also in 2013, we’re celebrating St. Helena Hospital’s 135 years of service to the Napa Valley, White Memorial Medical Center’s Centennial and Castle Medical Center’s 50th anniversary of providing care to their communities. We’re thankful for the dedicated teams at each location that make milestones such as this possible.

As we focus on 2013 and the years ahead, we’re confident that with hard work, dedication and prayer, we can continue delivering the mission-driven, quality health care that we’ve brought to our communities for more than 100 years.

Strategy Statement

By the end of 2017, Adventist Health, through its engaged workforce, will transform the health experience, outcomes and status for our target populations. We will coordinate a fully integrated, value-based network of services with the ability to manage information and full-risk through owned or partnered health plans. Our presence in Western states—including rural markets—where we will have an advantageous competitive position enables us to double the number of people served resulting in $4 billion in revenue with a 4% operating margin. Our advantage will be our commitment to faith-based, whole person health embedded within the Seventh-day Adventist heritage.
